Let’s eat!
EAT
Granola Goddess Situation: “It’s the granola I make if we’re going to have special houseguests, or if I’m going to give it away. It’s so good. I don’t love a super sweet breakfast. I like to err on the side of spicy-savory, with some base sweet notes—that’s fine—but I don’t like a straight sweet situation in general.” Heidi Swanson in Taste
Bake It: Heidi’s California Masala Cluster Granola.
J.D. Salinger’s Recipe for “Soup”: “Broccoli, size of a child’s fist, sliced entirely into tiny pieces, dime thickness.” The Bittman Project
Cold-Fried French Fries: You should have (these) french fries for dinner at least once a year. The Washington Post
Jacques Pepin’s Pandemic Cooking Videos: “What I wanted to show was how to use the supermarket. It’s a revelation. In a restaurant you have people to do all the prep, but at home you don’t have that. So use the market for your prep if you don’t have time to do it yourself: pre-sliced mushrooms, boneless chicken, prewashed spinach, in five minutes you can have a meal.” The Counter
Edible Pursuit: When fishing for "black cod," fishermen used to employ long lines of baited hooks, but something kept eating the fish before the lines were reeled in (they now light-weight collapsible pots). What was it?
Make It: Miso-Marinated Black Cod.
DRINK
The Tommy’s Margarita: “For all his innovations, however, Tommy’s Mexican Restaurant was still in the Richmond; Bermejo was working in a vacuum. “We were kind of in our own little world,” he says. “At that time, in my 20s, I was not out and about. We had no publicity. Our focus was just to make our guests happy, so they would come back.” Since the mid-aughts, the Tommy’s Margarita has appeared on menus in Turkey, India, Indonesia, Colombia, Scotland, Germany, Ireland and many other countries. In 2014, a Denny’s in Manhattan was serving it.” Punch Drink
Drink It: Tommy’s Margarita recipe. Ain’t no salt on our rim either (but you do what you gotta do). Shaking ours up lately in a mason jar with the 2020 Tequila Ocho Single Estate Cerro Grande Tequila Reposado, which is also a ridiculously sublime and smooth sipping tequila as well (more tasting notes here). Sure, you could go two-fisted there and you wouldn’t be wrong. And oh yeah, always on the rocks.
Juicy Fruit: Salad for President’s Julia Sherman and winemaker Martha Stoumen have refashioned verjus into an effervescent drink that’s everything the zeitgeist asked for. Vanity Fair
JoEllen Depakakibo Of Pinhole Coffee: “JoEllen has been working in coffee for over a decade. She started Pinhole Coffee in 2014 and it has become the quintessential neighborhood cafe in Bernal Heights.” Sprudge
THINK
What to Read When You’re Really Bored: The NYT Cooking Comments Instafeed. h/t Anna Jones.
Crying in H Mart: “Sobbing near the dry goods, I ask myself, “Am I even Korean anymore if there’s no one left in my life to call and ask which brand of seaweed we used to buy?” Michelle Zauner in The New Yorker

25 Gamechangers: Including the mayor of Flavortown who has raised millions of dollars for restaurant employees in need. Food & Wine
Put An Egg On It: But make it vegan. “There’s a particular pleasure that commercial vegan products haven’t yet captured: the egg yolk in all of its gooey, globular, food porn-y glory.” Until now. Vice
Just Because You Can Doesn’t Mean You Should: “I miss airline meals so much I make them at home.” BBC
The Women Erased From the Story of No-Knead Bread: Suzanne Dunaway’s “No Need to Knead had been nominated for a James Beard Award in 2000, was featured in Bon Appétit and the Los Angeles Times, and Buona Forchetta, which closed in 2003, was frequently hailed as one of the top bakeries in Los Angeles.” And yet, Jim Lahey is credited with making no-knead bread trendy? Gone Fishing: Latest on the local bite from Kirk Lombard. Despite all the YouTuber’s bragging about their limits, everyone else is getting blanked. Sea Forager

ICYMI: This month’s playlist slams it into high gear right out of the gate with “The Gathering,” Frank Turner’s foot-stomping anthem that envisions his first concert after the Covid-19 lockdown. It’s followed by a few similiarly themed rockers from Delta Spirit, Two Door Cinema Club and Spoon, before sliding into a “Good Vibrations” groove. Also, our favorite new tracks from Sunny War, Rodrigo y Gabriela, and Natalia LaFourcade.
That’s all for this week.
